The Sydney Smith Association exists to celebrate the life and legacy of an exceptional man. Its members bask in the humanity of his writings, remember his political acumen, enjoy his 200 year old witticisms and emulate his love of good food and good conversation.

In 1995, a commemorative service was held in Foston, near York, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the death of its most famous cleric, the Reverend Sydney Smith. In response to the interest in and attendance at this event, the late Major Peter Diggle, a resident of the parish, decided to bring together a group of people interested in this influential reformer, and in 1996 the Association was founded.
The society developed from its Yorkshire roots and now has a membership of around 200, publishes an annual Newsletter, holds convivial lunches and every year hosts a one-day event or weekend of activities in a location connected with Sydney’s career. Read more >
