In 1995, a commemorative service was held in Foston, near York, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the death of its most famous cleric, the Reverend Sydney Smith. In response to the interest in and attendance at this event, the late Major Peter Diggle, a resident of the parish, decided to bring together a group of people interested in this influential reformer, and in 1996 the Association was founded. From the start it attracted keen support – Anglican, Catholic, liberal and literary. The society developed from its Yorkshire roots and now has a membership of around 200, publishes an annual Newsletter, holds convivial lunches in Yorkshire, London and Somerset, and hosts each year a one-day event or weekend of activities in a location connected with Sydney’s career. The Association aims to promote not only the preservation of the churches associated with his ministry, but also a wider appreciation of the man himself and his works. You are warmly invited to join us.
